American University was chartered by the Congress in 1893. A private, liberal arts university in Washington D.C., the University offers bbachelors, masters and doctoral programs as well as certificate and associate degree programs through the six schools: College of Arts and Sciences, Kogod School of Business, School of Communication, School of International Service, School of Public Affairs and Washington College of Law. In Fall 2008, there were 6,023 students in undergraduate programs, 3,297 in graduate programs, 1,667 in law and 1,199 students enrolled in nondegree, certificate and study abroad programs.
